Song of the Day

Title: C'est La Vie
Artist: B*Witched

So today's song of the day is a major throwback; late 90''s, almost 20 years old throwback. It came up in the office today someone said 'C'est La Vie, what is that Spanish?' I said no, it's French, and does anyone remember that song? And started singing it haha.
I remember this song from when the first time I went to Australia in 1998, two of my female cousins who are a few years older I remember dancing and jumping up and down the bed singing to this and the Spice Girls.

How do we know it was 90's for sure? Well besides looking it up, just take a look at all the denim in the pic below.

Quote of the Day

"Don't listen to the cynics. They were wrong about my generation and they were wrong about yours."
- Joe Biden, US Vice President.

Thank you Mr. Biden. This topic comes up in the office ALL the time about how our generation is different from the past. From saying things like we don't have the same work ethic, to being an entitled generation, and liberal. We won't have the same work ethic as our grandparents, many of whom came off boats from other countries and had to make lives for themselves. Just like the generation in between doesn't have that same work ethic either. The norm for our generation is go to school, then college, then get a job, many of which are technology driven.
When you look at a generation younger than you, you're always going to criticize. The critics look forward at what is and not back at what they were, the generation before us was part of a hippie pothead, disco era generation and don't compare themselves then to us now. Just like in 25 years I'm sure we won't criticize based on how we were, but rather how we are. It's even visible in my fraternity's chapter at school, seeing new classes brought in with different mindsets and different ways of doing things, but still have the same morals/values that we do. In the end, so long as everyone is driven by good morals and values, they may do things differently than other generations, but everything turns out okay.

Once Upon a Deathly Hallow

Last night I caught a similarity between Once Upon a Time and Harry Potter that I noticed when I watched Deathly Hallows Part 2. It is Henry breaking the Authors Quill, and Harry breaking the Elder Wand; both for the same reason  No one should have that much power

Check them out below and note how very similar they are.

Once Upon a Time - Henry

VS

The Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Harry

Scene's and dialogue are almost exactly identical.

Quote of the Day

"Lose one friend,
Lose all friends,
Lose Yourself"
- Plays With Squirrels/Eric Matthews, Boy Meets World

I have always loved this quote from the first time I heard it on this episode. It is a simple reminder that friends play a very important role in your life. Every heard the saying 'tell me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are' or 'you are who your friends are'. There is so much truth to that. Luckily I have some damn good friends.
This quote in context of the episode is a reminder to not let the stupid little fights turn into stupid big fights.

Title: Watch Me
Artist: Silento

I love this song. The first time I heard it was 4th of July this year, we were in my sister's boyfriends car, this song comes on I look up I see him, my sister, and his sister all doing this almost perfectly in sync. I was LOVING it. I was like why do I not know this?! Needless to say I picked it up pretty quickly (by the end of the song).

Random Video of the Day

HOKAY, SO..... everyone remembers this video from middle school/high school, I remember laughing about this in the hallways and before class started. The only way to watch this video then though, was online. This was classic. Before smartphones, and even before Youtube I think. I think the only place you could watch it was on Ebaums World, and you needed to have flash player installed on your computer to view it. Enjoy this blast from the past! - ZE END!

Song of the Day

Title: Gallery
Artist: Mario Vasquez

I woke up today with this song playing in my head. So random as I completely forgot about this song. Came out in 2006, not sure what made me think of it, but it's a good throwback.
Figured it'd be a good way to mix up the song of the day.

Quote of the Day

"Don't find fault. Find a Remedy"
-Henry Ford, American Businessman

Often times people look at something and see a problem or and obstacle. I look at things and say lets do it, and think of a few ways to do it. To me those idea's come easy, although some may or may not be realistic, but at least I'm willing to try rather than say 'no let's not even bother' or 'it's not gonna work'
Never problems, only solutions.

Title: Cheerleader
Artist: OMI

***Official song of Summer 2015***

Quote of the Day

"To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness."
-Bertrand Russel, British Philosopher

I saw this quote and it immediately made so much sense. Part of being happy is the desire to want or do something, then getting or doing it, and constantly adding to that list. Imagine waking up and having nothing to look forward to in the future. There is always something that we are looking forward to having; be it an item, a job, a relationship, a trip, a move, an event, a family - this list is endless and always continues to grow as you check it off. It actually reminds me of a reading I know called 'The Station'; my Sigma Chi brothers will be very familiar with this one.
Life is about the journey, not the destination.

Song of the Day

Title: Fight Song
Artist: Rachel Platten

Another fitting song after yesterday, or for any day you're feeling down. Definitely a pick me up, inspirational song. When someone says you can't do something, and you know you can, this is a song for that. One of my favorite lines from any song I've heard comes from this one.
"I might only have one match, but I can make an explosion"
So much truth to that line, just like in The Little Giants, all you need is one time.

Quote of the Day

"Just Keep Swimming"
- Dory, Finding Nemo

After the day I had yesterday, couldn't think of a more appropriate quote for today.

Shitty Day

The above GIF perfectly sums up how I'm feeling right now. Yes, I'm mad bro. In fact I'm pretty agitated.
I wasn't going to go to the gym today, but decided to anyway...so as I'm leaving a car is pulling out, I let her go and begin to pull forward. Then another car starts pulling out...right into where I am. Had he backed out straight it would have been fine. So I beep, he doesn't stop. Then I myself begin to back up to avoid an accident. He keeps going and backs right into my front end.
Were you even looking where you were backing out into?!
'Do we exchange information?' he says. Uh, yea, we do. The front right end of my car is now all scratched up, and pushed in so that the hood on that side slightly overhangs the light... So, that'll be fun to deal with and get fixed. Do I go through insurance? Nah, probably not. Will see if he wants to settle outside of insurance. Because he was definitely at fault as I have an eyewitness to reference.
The cherry on top...I go home to grab something, and Cooper pooped on the floor. Fine that's ok I'm used to it. Then I pick it up with toilet paper and throw it in the toilet, and my keys all into the toilet with the poop...so I have to fetch them  out with my bare hands and wash those off...

It's barely 1:30, and the day isn't even half over....hope that's the worst of it.

***UPDATE 4:30 PM - Fraudulent charges on my debit card ($500)...card is deactivated, have to go to the bank and get a new one***

On the plus side - it looks like I can turn a shitty day into a semi-comical blog post. (These pictures and being able to vent through here made me feel a little a lot better about it) And this book came in for me today.

Random Video of the Day

Stumbled upon this one today. This clip is from Dancing with the Stars this past season (Rumor and Val). It was on Disney night, and I loved how this couple did a villains song. Not only that, but they absolutely crushed it! I love ballroom style dancing; took lessons for a few months, would love to jump into it again.

Title: John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16

I call this the '3 John's Song'. Feel good song for a day like today. Always belt out to this one when I'm driving when it comes on the radio, usually on the highway - windows down. Best feeling. Definitely on my list to karaoke.

Quote of the Day

"Life is not about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself"
-George Bernard Shaw, Irish Playwright

I love this quote. For my High School graduation, my mom made a board  compiled of a bunch of quotes, most about advancing from one part of your life into the next. This has been my favorite. I took that quote off of the board and made a viewing case with that quoted pinned to it, along with any tickets I had saved to that point in my life. This includes Red Sox and Bruins games, trips to Italy and Florida, concert tickets, some even museum tickets I had saved from a trip to Italy, and even my wristband from when I was in the hospital from when I broke my leg. It's important to me because these experiences all played a role in shaping the person I am today.

Title: Marvin Gaye
Artist: Charlie Puth featuring Meghan Trainor

We can call this the song of the weekend. If I saw you this weekend I probably showed it to you. Definitely my new favorite song. Glad Meghan Trainor isn't the only one bringing this 50's style music back, he made a great choice having her as the featured artist in this song.

Great simple quote for a Monday.

Once Upon a Time 1x03: Snow Falls

This episode wasn't one of my favorite when it aired, but the flashback story is kind of cool. This episode goes into how Snow White and Prince Charming first met, and creates a history between them.

Quote of the episode: Emma Swan: "Not having a happy ending is painful enough, but giving someone unrealistic hope is far worse."

In Storybrooke, Henry convinces Mary Margaret to read "their story" to a coma patient whom Henry believes is Prince Charming. Mary Margaret reads his story and he wakes up. And escapes to the woods, which has Emma, Mary Margaret, and Graham the town sheriff off tracking him. They find him and get him back to the hospital at which point Regina is there waiting. She informs him that his name is David Nola, and that she found his wife. Keep in mind this is a curse Regina cast to ruin everyone's happiness. That's three blows to Snow/Mary Margaret, first she doesn't even know who he is, next he is in a coma, lastly he is married to a woman named Kathryn. Emma picks up that something wasn't right and confronts Regina.

In the flashback, you see that Charming and Snow meet by her hijacking and stealing from his carriage while he is on a journey with his fiance Abigial (Kathryn in Storybrooke). Bascially the whole episode is them finding and saving eachother. Which in turn codes their motto "I will always find you" which is said between the two of them numerous times throughout the series.

So overall, pretty slow episode. Was interesting how the writers came up with this story on how these iconic characters met; during Snow White's time as a bandit.

Lion King - Timon and Pumba Luau

This has been my favorite scene of the Lion King since I first saw it when I was 5 years old. My  uncle remembers me loving this scene as a kid and to this day always brings it up to remind me how funny I thought it was as he feels the same way about it. I still crack up when I see this scene.

Nonna

A blog is a place where you share you're thoughts and writing. My grandmother passed away 6 months ago, and it still feels like yesterday. I was the one to write and deliver the eulogy, which is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I realized if you weren't there, you didn't get to hear it. Until now I never thought to post or share it on any social media with anyone else besides family. Here it is.

"Good Morning, my name is Anthony DeJulio, Conncetta's first grandson..many of you knew her as Connie, but she was also called Co- by my grandfather and ma, mum, mummie, or mamma by my aunts and uncle. My cousins and I would call her Cons, Nons, or Nonna.
For the duration, I will be referring to her as Nonna, which means grandmother in Italian, and is what my cousins and I have all called her all our lives, and will continue to refer to her as when we remember her and share her memory.
She would be so proud the way this family came together over past couple of weeks; especially today to have each one of her grandchildren participating in this mass.
One thing has become clear, as she was sick and after she passed; when we would talk about her everyone would smile and laugh rather than get upset, as when she was alive, she always brought a smile to your face.
Nonna was born November 10th, 1941 in Roccapalumba, Sicily. She came to America at the age of 14. Five years later at the age of 19 she met my grandfather at the moose lodge here in Waltham. They were married 3 months after meeting; and they were together for life. By the time she was 28 she had 4 kids, 3 of which came between the ages of 20 & 24. It's crazy to think that by the time she was my age, she had 3 kids.
While my grandfather was very strict and old fashioned, Nonna welcomed my father and uncles with open arms (my Nonno welcomed them too only it took a couple of months). She loved my grandfather with all of her heart, she would call him "Aynes", and for the longest time none of us knew why or what it meant. When we finally asked her she explained that she was calling him Enzo, short for his name Vincenzo.
She was a young grandmother, she was 48 when I was born. And her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She used to say all the time "I have 8 grandson, and one granddaughter, and I'm so blessed" She would always greet us calling us "Goia" and "Figio Bello", and when we were hurt she would hold us and say "Figio Mio!", which in italian is my child.
Nonna was always happy and it was very easy to get a laugh out of her.  You could say the smallest thing not even thinking it was funny, and she would laugh. She had a smile that was contageous. Her energy would instantly light up the room. She loved to dance, at any given function she would be the first one on the dance floor, and the last one to leave it.
She was a very nurturing woman, and being in her presence one thing was certain, you were never hungry when Nonna was around. Even if you had just eaten she would fill up another plate for you saying that you had to eat more. She would always say "you too skinny" and "you gotta eat". It seemed she was always in the kitchen. She loved to cook; some of her signature dishes were pasta with peas, sfingi, and baked spaghetti with peas and raisins. More than cooking, Nonna loved to bake, she had her famous "S" cookies or her orange juice cookies that she brought everywhere, and I know everyone here knows exactly what cookies I'm talking about. She would always have those readily available, or her pizzelle. Then, there were Nonna's famous brownies, to which my cousins and I referred to as "Nonna's Sponges". They were different than any other brownie you had ever eaten, but before you knew it you had eaten four, and they were delicious.
After we ate we would play Scopa, a game played with Italian cards. Towards the end it seemed like this is all we did, it made her so happy. However, Nonna hated to lose. You did not want to be Nonna's partner after making a bad move, or losing a round.
Nonna always loved going to Florida. She was so happy when my grandfather bought their condo there. It was where she had a lot of her friends. What she loved more than seeing her friends there, was when her family was down there with her.
As I have alluded to, family was the most important thing to Nonna. So much so that for her 50th wedding anniversary Nonno and Nonna surprised us all at Christmas with tickets to a cruise later that year. She wanted more than anything to have a trip with her entire family. That trip gave us memories we will never forget and always cherish. We came back from that trip with so many pictures, and Nonna loves her pictures. When you walk into her house the first thing you notice is that there are pictures, EVERYWHERE. She loved talking about them, each one had a story and a memory. She would always pull out the same one of her brother and say to me and Joey, you remind me of my brother or look like my brother. We gathered she thought that because we are tall like he was.
Nonna loved to talk on the phone. So much so that they had to increase her monthly minutes from 750 to 1500. I remember being in school and getting a call from Nonna at least once a week, as do my cousins and siblings. We all remember Nonna loving to talk; on the phone, about pictures, about her grandchildren, about her family, anything and everything. It's hard to imagine that a time came where that wasn't possible for her to do anymore.
A year and a half ago, to try to contain the cancer, her voicebox was removed, and we would never again hear her speak. The night before the operation, we sat around the table just listening to her speak and tell stories.
My grandmother was a very strong woman; she did not let this operation change her.  She still gave the same smile and energy as she always had done. She would use the same hand gestures when she talked or communicated, and they were always the same gestures *(make gestures)* whether she was happy or mad, having a voice, or no voice.
Last December of 2013 Nonna went to the hospital, and I received a call from my mom, and I knew it wasn't good news. We all went to dinner, to hear what I had already feared. We got to the restaurant and sat with my aunts, uncles, and all my cousins to hear the news.... We were told she would have 4 months to live without chemo or 6-10 months to live with chemo. We had thought that Christmas was going to be her last, along with new years.
Like I said before, Nonna was very strong. She fought and we got to share one final Christmas and new years with her this year; which was the best gift any of us could have asked for. Over that time, when she got sick, she never complained, as much pain as she could have been in, we would ask Nonna are you ok, ma are you ok?  She would mouth to us, I’m ok, I’m fine because she never wanted us to worry about her.
She passed away peacefully at home Tuesday afternoon with her family by her side.
I would like to now introduce my Uncle Mario, Nonna's only son; to share a reading on the behalf of him, my mother Anna, and Aunts Gina and Lisa. But before I do, I leave you with this quote -

"Those we love remain, for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one is gone. Those we love can never be more than a thought apart. For as long as there is memory, they will live on in the heart"

Spread of Worlds 5 Largest Religions

Below is a link that has a video that shows the spread of the worlds 5 largest religions.

Map Shows How Religion is Spread Around the World

It's actually very educational, and gives you a different way to view religion altogether. This video shows the 5 major religions, how and where they spawned, and how and why they spread.

Many religious people can be very close-minded and think that their religion may be the only one, or the best one (many wars have been religious crusades). Watch this video, open your mind, and see that while your religion is very popular - whether it be Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity, or another; the others are just as popular. Look across the map and see that just as large and how faithful your religion is there are others that have an equal following. The same way you believe in your practice as FAITH, others believe in theirs.

Girl Meets World - Girl Meets Mr Squirrels goes to Washington

I'm posting about this episode because they did something great with it, that when I saw it I was taken back in my seat a bit, as I did not expect it. They brought back a character that most of us had forgotten about, and the way they did it was perfect.

In this episode Eric is slotted to run for congress, and he enlists the kids as his campaign team. A very unlikely face shows up to help him in his campaign, Tommy. If you remember Tommy was the kid that Eric almost adopted. In the below clip Tommy stands up to speak on Erics behalf. It is a very heartwarming scene. (Also, Topenga's face while Tommy is speaking is quite comical).

The first clip is where I first heard this song, from Pitch Perfect 2. If you haven't seen that movie, you should. This clip is a SPOILER, so stop reading now if you don't want to know how the movie ends.I loved how they ended the movie with an 'original' song, and even more that they brought back all the alumni to participate in it's performance. This song happens @ 2 minutes into the clip if you want to cue up.

This second clip is the released version of the song from the soundtrack, recorded by Jessie J, a little slower than the first clip from the movie, but still great.

Once Upon a Time 1x02: The Thing You Love Most

The second episode of the series focuses on one of my favorite characters, Regina, and what it took for her to cast a curse to bring all these characters to our land. While in modern day develops a rivalry between her and her adoptive son Henry's birth-mother Emma Swan. The dynamic between Emma and Regina is beyond without a doubt my favorite on the show. Regina especially grows to be one of the most complex characters on the show. This second episode alone gives you more on who she is and what exactly she has sacrificed in an attempt to move forward.

Quote of the episode: Regina/Emma: "You have no idea what I'm capable of"

The curse requires many ingredients, and Regina (the evil queen) had thought she had them all, but one item did not suffice. She visited Rumplestiltskin; who also grows to be another one of the most complex characters on the show. He is the man who gave her the curse, she visits him to find out what she did wrong. She tells him she sacrificed the heart of her childhood steed, and he laughs at her and says "this is the curse to end all curses you thing the heart of a horse will do" and that "great power requires great sacrifice" and tells her she must sacrifice the heart of the thing she loves most. She realizes what it is and he asks her how far she is willing to go, she says as far as it takes. Everything with Rumple comes with a price, and the cost for this information was that he will have a comfortable life in this new land, and Regina would have to heed his every request so long as he says 'Please'.

As you can see in the above clip, the thing Regina loves most is her father, who has always stood by her side. She is willing to sacrifice him, to use his heart in order to achieve her revenge/happiness.

The flashback ends with Regina going to her fathers grave saying "I love you daddy" and we see on his grave that his name was Henry; and that's where young Henry got his name, by Regina honoring her father.

When I saw this, I jumped back in seat and gasped, and to this day when I see it, I get goosebumps because I cannot even imagine ever doing anything like this to achieve something I want. The grass isn't always greener on the other side, especially when you are doing something that cannot be undone.

Meanwhile in present day Storybrooke, Regina sees Emma as a threat and is trying to get her to leave town. She frames her and has her arrested. Then Emma comes back at Regina by cutting a branch off her prized apple tree. These are two very driven women who will fight to protect the thing they love, and for both of them Henry is all they have. People can be driven when they are fighting for themselves, but they are capable of so much more when they are fighting for someone or something that they care for.

The episode ends with Mr Gold (Rumpelstiltskin) walking in on Regina picking up the pieces of her tree Emma cut down. Regina asks him who Emma is, and he tells her he would think she knows exactly who Emma is. Regina pushes for the information but Mr Gold, exits by saying "I suggest you excuse me, please". It is at this point where you start to wonder if Gold knows anything of his life before the curse, and if so how much, or if that please was just a per chance request.

The Thing You Love Most is one of my favorite episodes of the series as it is a kick point for the show and introduces many things. You learn that Mary Margaret, Henry's teacher (Snow White) gave him the book, and when Emma hears this she realized 'hey wow, there is a .001% chance this woman could be my mother', but then writes it off. We learn of Gold's relationship with Regina. We learn what exactly she had to sacrifice to enact the curse, and saw what Regina was willing to sacrifice to do it. Most importantly, this episode is the start of a great rivalry between Regina and Emma.

Girl Meets World

So, if you haven't heard, there is a sequel series to Boy Meets World. Yes, it is a kids show (sort of). Yes it is on Disney Channel. However, to me, it is just a continuation of it's parent series.

When Boy Meets World finished Cory and  Topenga took off to New York, and Girl Meets World picks up there about 14 years later. The show is supposed to follow their daughter Riley and best friend Maya (who is a mirror of Cory's best friend Shawn Hunter). I say supposed to follow becuase while the scenes with Riley, Maya, their other friends Lucas (Topenga's mirror character), and Farkle (Minkus' mirror character AND son) can be entertaining; really most of us are focusing on and enjoying the scenes that include Cory and Topenga,

Cory is now an elementary school teacher and has followed in the footsteps of his lifelong teacher and mentor Mr. Feeny, and this creates an interesting dynamic in the classroom between him, his daughter and her friends. Topenga, works for a law firm, as expected from the end of the parent series, and has also bought out a local bakery to save it from being bought out by another company and being demolished. She is now the owner there and it is the kids hangout spot.

It's always a real treat to see the parent series regulars return to the show to guest star.

So far to date we have seen

  • Cory's parents Alan and Amy Matthews (boy have they aged),
  • Cory's brother Jacob (who if you remember almost didn't make it out of the hospital as a baby; he has been on for a few episodes as Maya's crush),
  • Cory's brother Eric
  • Cory's best friend Shawn, who has now been promoted to a series regular.
  • Mr. Feeny, who is now retired and living in the same home as they road tripped back there during an episode
  • Angela, Shawn's now ex-girlfriend who is currently married.
  • Mr Hunter, Shawn's father who gives him advice from beyond the grave
  • Stuart Minkus, Farkle's father
  • Harley Kiney, Cory's highschool bully, but now friend and elementary school janitor
Now Shawn has been promoted to a show regular, which means the we will be seeing a lot more of the original trio. He has found a kindred spirit in Maya, and is stepping in almost as a father figure to her. This has helped kick off a story line for Shawn as he won't just be Cory and Topenga's friend, but a mentor to Maya AND possibly Maya's mother's new boyfriend. In the most recent episode titled "Hurricane", Angela returned to talk to him. She is now 4 years married and tells him that their relationship together prepared her for the next step. As she leaves she points to Maya and her mother Katy, and the episode finished with Katy asking Shawn out, and Shawn's father telling him not to pass up or mess up this opportunity. This was a great way to naturally integrate Shawn back into the show, rather than throwing him into Cory and Topenga's lives/storyline with their kids.

This series is doing a great job by keeping the original Boy Meets World fans interested by constantly bringing back alumni, and keeping them very much the same characters that we remember; while at the same time growing new fans who will follow Riley, Maya, and Lucas' storyline.
